In my previous post, I told you about all the possible reasons why you have dandruff. In this post, I’m going to tell you how to get rid of dandruff using natural remedies, so let’s get started.

But first, a piece of advice: Go to the doctor
There is just so much that you can do to fix a problem. If you have a skin condition, such as seborrheic dermatitis, you should go to the doctor because this is a more severe case of dandruff and you would benefit from a specialist’s advice.
If you have a lot of itchiness and your scalp is very irritated, you should visit a dermatologist. They will be able to prescribe you an adequate treatment for your skin and make sure the fungus on your scalp is not growing out of control. They can also give you topical steroid solutions to make the inflammation go down..
And now, natural remedies to get rid of dandruff
Apple cider vinager
Apple cider vinegar has many uses and, for me, its one element that can not be missing at home. You can use it to regulate the ph on your scalp so the environment where the fungus, pityrosporum orbiculare, grows is modified and cannot develop anymore. You should mix equal parts of vinegar and water and then pour this mix on your scalp, making sure it is distributed all over it. Leave it on for around 15 minutes and then rinse your hair with cold water.
Aspirin
I know dandruff can become such an issue that it can give you a headache, but the aspirin is not for you but for your hair. Aspirins contain salicylic acid, an element that is often used in anti-dandruff shampoos and that is very effective at inducing flakes to fall, which helps the shedding and avoids the build-up of dead skin cells. If you wanna DYI your own anti-dandruff shampoo, all you have to do is crush a couple of aspirins until they become powder and put them inside of your shampoo bottle.
Tea tree oil
This oil will be very beneficial for you, especially if you have been itchy and scratching your scalp. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties, which will help to reduce the irritation on your skin and keep clean any open wound you have on your scalp. It’s very powerful against the fungus that is the culprit of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Since it is a very potent oil, you shouldn’t apply it directly on your delicate scalp skin. Instead, use another oil as a base and put some drops of tea tree oil in it. This is specifically important if you have a sensitive scalp. Another thing you can do is mix some drops of this oil with your regular shampoo.
Coconut oil
We have all heard about the advantages of involving coconut oil in our daily beauty routine. If you have dry skin you will find a very good ally in coconut oil. It is a great and natural moisturizer. Maintaining your scalp skin hydrated is essential to keep your scalp healthy since dryness contributes to making dandruff more severe. Use coconut oil by spreading it all over your scalp and massaging it. Reconsider using it this way if you have an oily scalp: if this is your situation, you can use it on the end of your hair to make it shinier and moisturized it, but not directly on your scalp and not to fight dandruff.
Aloe vera
Skin irritation and itchiness are two consequences of dandruff that can aggravate this condition if you give in and start scratching your scalp. To avoid doing this, you can use aloe vera, which is a natural anti-inflammatory and will help to sooth the need to scratch your scalp. It also has antifungal and antibacterial properties, which makes it a really good weapon against dandruff. Slide a leaf of aloe vera in half and scoop all the jelly out. Put the jelly all over your scalp and massage. Apart from having cooling effects, it is also good for hair growth so take advantage of all of its benefits.
Baking soda
I have already lost count of how many uses baking soda has. It is good for your stomach, to wash your mouth, for your skin and, now, I’m going to tell you how to use it to fight dandruff. You just need to grab a handful of baking soda and sprinkle it all over your scalp. Then, with your fingertips, start rubbing your scalp. This will exfoliate your scalp skin and help it to get rid of any flakes. It will also absorb the oils of your skin so it will work well if you have an oily scalp but you should avoid using too much of it if you have a dry skin issue.
Improve your diet
There are some foods that you should be incorporating into your diet if you want to have healthy skin, healthy hair and a healthy body in general. The first thing you should be adding to your diet is probiotics. Many people don’t know how important they are and do not know how to get them neither.
Probiotics are important because, among its many benefits, it is a good enhancer of the immune system. Consuming probiotics can improve your dandruff case if it is produced by an ingrowing of fungus since your immune system will be able to fight any fungal infections better. You can find them in fermented foods and even prepare your own. Yogurt is a good source of probiotics, as well as apple cider vinegar (you should be drinking the one that has sediments at the bottom of the bottle) and miso. You can ferment cabbage and prepare sauerkraut or buy kefir and make probiotic water.
Eating more foods with omega-3 fatty acids will help to maintain dandruff out of your life. It has a positive effect on hydration and oil production, which will affect your dead skin shedding positively so it won’t be able to build up. It also improves your skin healing ability, which is very good if you are itchy and have been scratching your scalp. You can find omega-3 fatty acids in foods like salmon, oysters, chia seeds and soybeans.
Improve your cleaning routine
Even though dandruff is not always provoked by a lack of cleanness, it can be aggravated by it. Using shampoos that are too aggressive for your scalp can be irritating it or drying your skin, so you should modify your hair products to make sure they are not the source of the problem.
Sometimes, we use too many products and we don’t wash our hair well enough. if you don’t want products to build upon your scalp, you need to dedicate time to wash your hair. For example, if you are using hot rollers to do your curls and then you spray them to hold them in place, it will not be enough to put shampoo on your scalp and then rinse it: you need to rub your scalp with your fingertips to ensure you are retiring all the dead skin cells and all the hair products you have been using.
Use these natural remedies to get rid of dandruff. They need you to compromise since they aren’t an overnight solution, but they are worth it since they are low cost, easy to get and to execute. In my next post, I will make a review on the best anti-dandruff shampoos so you will be prepared to fight against it if dandruff ever dares to come back.
